INDICES

Elliot O'Leary MATHS GCSE English 8 cards

Cards in this deck (8)

  1. 1What is 2^-2?1/2^2 OR 1/4
  2. 2What is the NEGATIVE INDICES 3^-3?1/3^3 OR 1/27
  3. 3What is the rule for MULTIPLYING POWERS?add the indices, e.g: 2^2 x 2^3 = 2^5
  4. 4What is the rule for DIVIDING POWERS?subtract the indices, e.g: 3^5 / 3^2 = 3^3
  5. 5What is the rule for a POWER OF A POWER?multiply the powers, e.g: (a^2)^3 = a^6
  6. 6What is the rule for FRACTION INDICES?bottom number is the root, e.g: 49^1/2 = ^2√49
    49^1/3 = ^3√49
  7. 7What is the rule for NEGATIVE FRACTION INDICES?you must add a numerator of 1 after turning into a root,e.g:
    49^-1/2 = 1/√49 OR 1/6
    49^-1/3 = 1/^3√49 OR 16
  8. 8If the numerator is larger than 1 with FRACTION INDICES?make it 1, then proceed as normal,e.g:
    32^4/5 = (32^1/5)^4 = 2^4 OR 16
