Assessments to be used for tracking student learning
1. Five students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
3. Five students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic.
(of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels & 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs)
2. Twelve students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
I would get the students to answer the following quiz:
https://www.educationquizzes.com/ks2/music/instruments/
Thereafter I would get them to listen to Grieg's 'In The Hall of the Mountain King' and answer questions about this piece via the following quiz...
https://www.educationquizzes.com/ks2/music/grieg-in-the-hall-of-the-mountain-king/
This quiz introduces musical terms like "staccato" which will require them to research the meanings of the words before coming to an answer.
I would get this group of students to do an activity on music instruments and discuss how they are grouped i.e. how they are grouped in an orchestra (strings, woodwind, etc) and to go further to find out which clefs belong to which instruments.
After completion of grouping instruments and understanding which instruments use which clefs, I would use excerpts from the music theory book to test their understanding and knowledge individually
After practising with each other in small groups or pairs with the flashcards I will ask each student to answer 2 questions anonymously (that I have prepared in advance) about the content taught. This will let me know if the students have understood the content.
This group of students would sit with me again to go over the lesson content together. I will then help them to simplify the information or the language used and create flashcards to help them study the content. These will be in the form of facts on the front of the card and true or false on the back of the card.
For the 2 students who have little to no comprehension, I will use a worksheet that uses words and images as a quiz. The quiz will require the student to match the instrument to the correct instrument group. The instrument name will be given at the top of the worksheet with its corresponding picture. The instruments that they will be required to match to the instrument family will have fill in the blanks below each instruments with clues (i.e. 1 or 2 letters) so they can decode the names of the instruments. If possible, I will request for a learning support teacher to sit in to observe and assist with these 2 students.
