Comparative and Superlative Adjectives
What are comparative adjectives?
The comparative is used in English to compare differences between the two objects it modifies (larger, smaller, faster, higher)
It is used in sentences where we compare two names, in the following way: Name (subject) + verb + adjective in comparative degree + than + name (object).
What are superlative adjectives?
Superlative adjectives are used to indicate that one of the qualities of an object or person is at the maximum extreme. In other words, in that quality, that object is superior to all other objects belonging to a group.
The + superlative + noun. Example: The tallest girl.
RULES FOR FORMING THE COMPARATIVE AND THE SUPERLATIVE
Most adjectives have an 'er' added at the end to form the comparative and 'est' to form the superlative.
If the adjective ends in 'e', only an 'r' is added for the comparative and 'st' for the superlative
Some adjectives that end in a consonant, duplicate the final consonant to form the comparative and the superlative
When the adjective ends in 'y', the 'y' is changed to an 'i' and 'er' is added at the end to form the comparative and 'est' to form the superlative
Some adjectives, however, do not have a different form for the comparative or the superlative, and you must use 'more' and 'most' to form them. In general, they are adjectives that have more than two syllables or end in 'ful', 'ing', 'ous', 'ive', 'ish', 'al', 'able' and 'ed'.
