The process of interaction design
Interaction Design
- Plan or schemed conceived in the mind and intended for subsequent execution
- Great balance requires experience
- Should always generate alternatives
- A plan should always be communicated and create sketches
- Evalation of designs is key
- A plan should always be communicated and create sketches
- Should always generate alternatives
4 Basic activities for design
- 1) Identify needs & Establish requirements
- Who are the target users, what activity does it provide
- People who interact directly with the product to achieve a task
- Primary Users: Frequent hands on users
- Secondary Users: Occasional users
- Primary Users: Frequent hands on users
- Stakeholders: People or organizations who will be affected by the system and have a direct or indirect influence, on system requirements
- People who interact directly with the product to achieve a task
- Capabilities, how and why they are trying to achieve something
- Consider cultural diversities, experience and physical characteristics
- Who are the target users, what activity does it provide
- 4) Evaluate & Measure
- Includes errors, usability and acceptability
- Important aspects to consider, effectiveness, efficiency, safety, utility, learnability, memorability
- Includes errors, usability and acceptability
- 2) Develope alternatives designs that make the cut
- Create a conceptual model of the product
- 3) Build Interactive Designs
- Most sensible way for users to interact with the product. Ex: Paperprototype
- 3 key components of Design
- Needs to be focused on users
- Specific usability & UX goals
- Allows iteration aka Feedback
- Stick to stuff people know
- Use inspiration from other inventions
- Look at the competition
- Use inspiration from other inventions
- You choose one based on external and internal features
- Quality of the produc is involved

Life Cycle Models
- To represent a model that captures a set of activities and how theyre related
- Simple LifeCycle Model
- Incorporates Iteration & encourages user focus
- Based on information and observations
- Incorporates Iteration & encourages user focus
- Life Cycles in Software Engineering
- Waterfall Life Cycle
- Linear model
- Each step must be completed before another
- 5 Steps
- Each step must be completed before another
- Linear model
- Spiral Life Cycle Model
- Encourages alternatives to be considered
- Problems are encountered and re adressed
- Encourages alternatives to be considered
- R.A.D. / DSDM
- User centered use to minimize risk
- Time limited cycles: 6 months
- Incorporate user involvement, evaluation and iteration
- 5 Phases
- JAD systems: Users and developers trash out requirements of the system
- Incorporate user involvement, evaluation and iteration
- Time limited cycles: 6 months
- User centered use to minimize risk
- Waterfall Life Cycle
- Simple LifeCycle Model
- Star Life Cycle Model
- Does not specify an order of activities
- Activities highly interconnected
- Evaluation is key to the model
- Activities highly interconnected
- Life Cycles in HCI
- Usability Engineering Life Cycle
- Involved analysis, design and installation
- Substeps may be skipped if not necessary
