the Maori people

1. they believe that their ancestors arrived in new zeland in a fleet of seven canoes and each canoe carried a group that become a different Maori tribe.

2. in the late 18th century, large groups of europeans began to arrive. The maori people began to adapt to the europeans culture

   • Today, the Maori people are fully immersed in modern life, but they still hold on to many of their traditional customs

3. The Moari lived in called IWI, and sub-groups called HAPU

4. leadership was also very kinship, the chief would be assigned his role based on the importance of his ancestors

5. the Maori had no writing systems until the europeans arrives

6. the Maori were excellent warriors and were often in conflict with other IWI.

7. As a defensive measure, the Maori would often build protective forts at the top of hills. These settlements were known as PA
