Coligative properties

  1. Boiling point elevation

    • The boiling point of a solvent is increased when adding another compound.
    • The solution has a higher boiling point than the pure solvent.
    • Example
      • Cooking: adding salt while boiling water will increase its boiling point, so it is actually hotter
  2. Osmosis

    • Diffusion between two liquids or gases which are able to mix through a semipermeable membrane.
    • Example
      • The absorption of water through the alimentary canal from stomach, small intestine and colon.
  3. Freezing point depression

    • The freezing point of a solvent is lowered by adding another compund.
    • The solution has a lower freezing point than the pure solvent.
    • Example
      • Antifreeze: ethylene glycol prevents the water in cars' radiators from freezing.
