  1. Classroom Reading Procedures

    • Pre-Reading
      • Predicting
        • Before reading, students can skim the text and try to answer warm-up questions given by the teacher which allows them to predict the story.
        • If the text has images, the students can look at them to try and infer the story.
      • Discussions
        • The teacher can bring questions related to the reading that will take place, which will spark conversations about the topic at hand.
        • A video can be show that relates to the reading which can also spark conversations relate to the topic.
      • Text-Surveys
        • Conduct a survey to gather an understanding of what the students know regarding the topic of the reading.
    • While-Reading
      • List of Questions
        • Hand-out a list of questions for the student to answer as they read along.
        • The questions should go from general to specific so the student can use skimming and scanning as reading strategies to complete the questions.
      • Meaning of Unfamiliar Words
        • Have students highlight and look for words that they do not understand so that they may better understand the context of the text.
      • Summarizing
        • The students can produce small summaries of each paragraph in the readin as they go along.
    • Post-Reading
      • Writing Assignment
        • Students can produce an essay or paper about the reading that they have conducted in class.
      • Debates
        • The teacher assigns sides which are taken from the text read and then the students have to conduct a debate in which both sides can be exposed and information can be taken directly from the reading.
      • Role-Plays
        • Students create conversations which include the vocabulary or topics of the reading and they present it in front of the class.
      • Project Work
        • Projects such as mind maps, concept maps, Power Point presentations, posters, etc ccan be assign to groups of students to present during the next class. This would of course be related to the reading.
