1. Jim Cummins' The Iceberg Analogy on second language acquisition.

   • Learning L1 gives the child skills and abilities in order to learn a second language.
     • CULP ( common underlying language proficiency) provides the settlements to develop L1 and L2, which is why with time is easier to learn more languages.

2. Cummin developed a model that can be organized on students' tasks

   • Context-embedded task
     • The learners have visual or oral aids which help them to confirm understanding.
   • Context-reduced task
     • Language is the unique source for the learner which can be a lecture or a reading text.
       • Context reduced may be the most difficult, but it is necessary for non-native speakers in their first years of learning.
