UP UP AND AWAY

  1. "Tony Douglas is redefining how to run massive construction projects"

    • "Who's tony douglas and how he gets involved in this big subject"
      • Tony is the person in charge of TS the proyect of BAA and before becoming the authority of British airports through the automotive sector also in commercial aircraft industries and an appliance company in kenwood
        • WHAT IS BAA?
          • "British airport authority"
            • TS is the name of the great glass project of BAA which its head of startup abandoned the project
  2. T5

    • Is the name of the big project
      • Is the fifth terminal of heathrow airport and serves 30 million passengers per year
      • Includes new roads and a railway and connections to London's transport network
    • In west London there is a large glass-fronted construction that will be the largest indentbuilding in Britain
      • Large construction projects are complicated but airports present special problems such as complex construction techniques also the need to interact with other transport links and install high technology
  3. BAA and its history on this topic

    • BAA was forced to address the potential problems seen in the TS project as if time and budget are not met this could bring down the company
    • Some Problems
      • Negotiation with betchel a management group would cost more than Douglas proposes also construction was carried out of its planned place reflecting physical limitations of the site
        • they only have one entry point at which a load of 12 meters must move every 30 seconds for a period of 4 years and the site has only 2 days of storage
      • Possible solutions
        • It has been said that the solution has been some logistics of the automotive industry and the site has great capacity for the logistics of the industry
          • A large computer investment and training that no individual proovedor would have made
  4. T5 agreement

    • Is a contract with the main developers and companies and subcontractors of the project
    • Contractors usually face low bidders and they rely on technical issues and delays to increase the cost and every thing goes wrong, a legal dispute is made between the bidders and between them and the contractor cause the work to stop for weeks with a delayed construction time runs out for final installation and testing of electrical systems
      • What generated douglas was to change the pace and culture of the project by allowing teams of employees from different forecasters to work together, for example cites the steel tower of air traffic control when the first two were made failed and according to douglas the manufacturers blamed on the structural engineers who blamed the steel manufacturer, Douglas raised this problem and sends them to find a collective solution
    • New Departures
      • The bidders of t5 are partners who will work on future projects in which they have great incentive to do a good job and if something goes wrong there can be a debate about negligence but not about who is to blame
        • If t worked so well, why not build more airports elsewhere?
          • the highest priority is to have a permit for an additional runway in stansed but ultimately the success points to a business that can build big projects safely and economically
