PIAGET'S STAGES

  1. CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE

    • The concrete stage a major turning point in the child's cognitive development, because it marks the beginning of logical or operational thought.
    • The child is now mature enough to use logical thought or operations (i.e. rules) but can only apply logic to physical objects (hence concrete operational).
  2. SENSORIMOTOR STAGE

    • During this earliest stage of cognitive development, infants and toddlers acquire knowledge through sensory experiences and manipulating objects. A child's entire experience at the earliest period of this stage occurs through basic reflexes, senses, and motor responses.
  3. PRE-OPERATIONAL STAGE

    • The preoperational stage occurs roughly between the ages 2 and 7. Language development is one of the hallmarks of this period.
    • During the preoperational stage, children also become increasingly adept at using symbols, as evidenced by the increase in playing and pretending.
  4. FORMAL OPERATIONAL STAGE

    • Involves an increase in logic, the ability to use deductive reasoning, and an understanding of abstract ideas. People become capable of seeing multiple potential solutions to problems and think more scientifically about the world around them.
