Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

  1. Total Productive Maintenance, also known as TPM, was born in the United States, and has its main antecedents in the preventive maintenance concepts developed in the 1950s. Preventive maintenance consists of partial revision activities in a planned way, in which they are executed changes, substitutions, lubrications, among other activities; before failures materialize.

    • Advantages of implementing TPM
      • The TPM focuses its objectives towards improving the efficiency of equipment and operations through reduction of failures, non-conformities, change, and is related, in the same way, to activities of order and cleanliness.
        • Quality improvement: equipment in good condition produce fewer non-conforming units.
        • Productivity improvement: Through increased time available.
        • Continuous Production Flows: Balance and Continuity of the system not only benefit the organization based on to the availability of time, but also reduces the planning uncertainty.
        • Use of human capital.
    • TPM abutments
      • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is based on six pillars:
        • Focused improvements.
        • Autonomous maintenance.
        • Planned maintenance.
        • Quality maintenance.
        • Education and training.
        • Security and environment.
    • Jidoka: Autonomization of defects
      • Jidoka's main objective is to equip the processes of self-control mechanisms quality, in such a way that in the event of an eventual abnormal situation, the process stops automatic or manual way, reducing the number of defective units advancing in the process.
