What Are Atoms?

1. Element

   • A substance that can neither be broken down nor converted into a different substance.

2. Atom

   • Smallest a particle of an element is the atom.
   • Composed of positive protons, neutral neutrons, and negative electrons.

3. Protons

   • All given elements have the same unique number of protons.

4. Electrons

   • Orbit around the nucleus of the atom in regions called electrons shells.
   • Shells increasing distance from the nucleus has increased energy.
   • Shells
     • Canc contain a maximum number of electrons.
     • Atom is stable with the outermost shell full.
