1. Comprehension: The Goal of Reading

   • extract meaning from what you read is the ultimate goal of reading.
     • Rather than passively reading text, readers must
       • analyze it
       • internalize it
     • The reading process requires

2. Importance of reading

   • Strengthens your writing skills.
   • Improves your memory and focus.
   • Enhances your imagination.
   • Increases your vocabulary.
   • Expands your knowledge.
   • Stimulates tour brain.
   • Boosts your mood.
   • Deepens empathy.
   • Helps you relax.
   • Lowers stress.

3. Three components of reading

   • Decoding
     • decoding refers to the process of translating a printed word into a sound.
   • Comprehension
     • It is defined as the level of understanding of a text/message.
   • Retention
     • The ability to retain, which relies heavily on a person’s decoding proficiency and ability to comprehend what is read.

4. General Strategies for Reading Comprehension

   • The key comprehension strategies are described below.
     • Reading strategies
       • Predict
         • Determine what you think, will happen in the text. Use the title, text, and illustrations to helps you.
       • Visualize
         • Create mental images of the characters, setting, and events in the text.
       • Question
         • Stop and ask yourself questions to see if the text makes sense. Floread the text if you need more information.
       • Connect
         • Think about what you already know about the text. Find wats to relate the text to yourself, other texts, and the world around you.
       • Identify
         • Determine the authers purpose. Find the important details, the main idea, and the themes of the text.
       • Infer
         • Use clues in the text and your own knowtedge to fill in the gaps and draw conclusions.
       • Evaluate
         • Think about the text as a whole and form opinions about what you read

5. Skimming and scanning

   • Helps you to find information easily and quickly. It is a really useful skill to have and will help you answer comprehension questions.
     • Skimming
       • Is when you read through a piece of writing quickly to see what it is about.
     • Acanning
       • Is when you scan the page with your eyes to find answers to questions.

6. Methods and techniques:

   • Mapping:
     • Mapping the chapter as you preview it provides a visual guide to how different chapter ideas fit together.
   • KWL Charts:
     • The purpose of a KWL Chart is figure out what you know, what you want to learn, and ultimately what you have learned.
       • K = What do you KNOW about the subject or chapter? (prior knowledge)
       • W = What do you WANT to know?
       • L = What have you LEARNED about the subject or chapter?
   • SQR3:
     • The purpose of this method is to encourage you to preview, look at the questions that go along with your chapter, and then to focus on the detailed reading of your chapter.
       • S = Survey.
       • Q = Question.
       • R3: Read. Re-read. Review(three Rs).
