Three-Dimensional Figures

  1. 3D shapes have length, width, and depth or height.

  2. A face is a flat surface.

  3. The sides are called lateral faces.

  4. The edges are the segments formed by intersecting faces.

  5. The edges intersect at the vertices.

  6. There are two types of three- dimensional figures; that are prisms and pyramids.

    • Prism:
      • Has at least three lateral faces that are parallelograms.
      • The shape of the base tells the name of the prism.
      • The top and bottom faces, called the bases, are congruent parallel polygons.
      • Examples: Rectangular prism.
        • Triangular Prism
        • Square Prism
      • A prism is a polyhedron that has two equal and parallel faces called bases and its lateral faces are parallelograms.
    • Pyramid
      • Has at least three lateral faces that are triangles.
      • Has only one base, which is a polygon.
      • The shape of the base tells the name of the pyramid.
      • Examples: Triangular Pyramid
        • Square Pyramid
      • The pyramid is a polyhedron, consisting of a simple polygon and triangles that have only one side.
  7. Three-dimensional figures have curved surfaces.

    • Cone
      • Has one base
      • The base is a circle
      • It has one vertex
      • A cone is obtained when a triangle rotates on one of its legs, that is, one of its minor sides, making a kind of pyramidal figure with a circular base.
    • Cylinder
      • A cylinder is a geometric body formed by a rectangle that rotates around one of its sides.
      • Has only two bases.
      • The bases are congruent circles.
      • Has no vertices and no edges.
    • Sphere
      • A sphere is a semicircle that rotates about its own diameter, is a smooth figure that lacks sides and corners.
      • All of the points on a sphere are the same distance from the center.
      • No faces, bases, edges, or vertices
