1. Purpose

   • Provides details or information about specific topic or subject matter
   • It may also:
     • describe
     • clarify
     • explain
     • analize

2. Structure

   • Introduction
     • Background information about the subject of the essay and the thesis statement
     • That is transmitted with some phrase some thesis statement in a strong way, to say what the essay will be about
   • Body
     • Supporting details connected by transition words and phrases
     • Discuss information by paragraph, which sends it to its most relevant point
   • Conclusion
     • Restates the thesis statement and synthezises the information presented in the text
     • Does not provide new information

3. structural elements

   • Main thesis
     • the focus of the essay
   • Introductory Paragraph
     • Provides brief information about the topic or main idea
     • contains the main thesis
   • body paragraphs
     • Present delaited evidence or supporting facts to explain the main idea
     • Connect the evidence or supporting facts to the main the main thesis
   • clear and good transitions
     • Is the words or phrases that link the main points of each paragraph and clarify the connections between ideas, your knowledge and conjunctions
   • concluding paragraph
     • affirms or restates the main thesis

5. Types

   • cause and effect
     • The causes or reasons for an event are detailed in order to later discuss its effects.
   • Descriptive
     • the author himself describes in your own words some event or object
   • Problem and solution
     • A problem of the current world is identified and from there it is started to propose a solution
   • Compare and contrast
     • In the essay, 2 topics are taken and both their similarities and their differences are explained.
