Steps to start a statistical investigation

1. Collection

   • The collection stage comprises several aspects
     • Distribution of the collection material or instrument
     • The collection itself
     • Control of the number of forms collected
     • Control over the quality of the information collected
   • Data is classified as
     • external
       • Information from a source other tha the files themselves
     • Internal
       • Data obtained from the files themselves
   • Collection can be done as follows
     • Occasional
       • If the information is taken in extraordinary circumstances
     • Periodic
       • The information is made in periods of regular time
     • Continuous
       • When the data is automatically recorded at the time the events occur, without interruption

2. Results presentation

   • The report must contain
     • Problem statement
     • Research objective
     • Hypotheses to be tested
     • Brief emposition of the adapted methodology, desing and sample size
       • Selection process of information and collection units
     • In some cases the report has a final part part where more general tables are included
     • Conclusions and recommendations
     • Copy of the form used and the questions considered most important
     • Description of the results in the form of tables and graphs

3. Organization

   • The material collected in the forms requires a critical examination
     • Good
     • Wrong but correctable
     • Uncorrectable and therefore disposable
     • Data must be encrypted
       • Each question must be identified with a number or a code

4. Planning

   • All statiscal data collection requires a prior plan that details the aspects of the research to be covered, for this it must consider six aspects.

     • 2. The purpose
     • 5. The material
     • 3. The source of information
     • 4. The procedures

5. Analysis

   • Is the most important stage of the report
     • The elaboration of distributions or frequency tables should be considered to be presented in the form of tables and graphs
       • Statisticians or estimators
       • punctual
         • Scatter and averages
           • Percentages and proportions
             • With the resulting figures, comparisons can be made with other studies in order to reach better conclusions
   • Analysis and statistical evaluation of the results
   • Analysis and technical evaluation according to the nature of the investigation
