Position Measurements

  1. Position measures are statistical parameters that allow defining a data set. That is, position measures help to know what a data set is like.

  2. Measures of central position

    • indicate the central value of a distribution, that is, they serve to find a representative value of the center of a data set.
      • Mean
        • is the average of all the data in the sample.
          • To calculate the mean , add all the values and then divide them by the total number of observations.
      • Median
        • is the middle value of all data ordered from smallest to largest.
          • The calculation of the median depends on whether the total number of data is odd or even
            • If the total number of data is odd , the median will be the value that is right in the middle of the data
            • If the total number of data points is even , the median will be the mean of the two data points in the middle
      • Mode
        • it is the value that repeats the most of the data se
          • to calculate the mode of a set of statistical data, it is enough to count the number of times that each datum appears in the sample, and the most repeated datum will be the mode
  3. Non-central position measurements

    • Quartiles
      • Quartile are the three values that divide an ordered data set into four equal parts. Therefore, the first, second and third quartiles respectively represent 25%, 50% and 75% of the statistical data set.
    • Quintiles
      • Quintiles are four values that divide an ordered data set into five equal parts. So the first, second, third and fourth quintiles represent 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of the sample data, respectively.
    • deciles
      • Deciles are nine values that divide an ordered data set into ten equal parts. So that the first, second, third,… decile represents 10%, 20%, 30%,… of the sample or population.
    • Percentiles
      • Percentiles are the values that divide an ordered data set into one hundred equal parts. So a percentile indicates the value below which a percentage of the data set is found.
