Water jet cut
What is water jet cut ?
- Water jet cut consists of a unique and advanced level of automation capable of cutting most materials with the best cost / benefit value.
- The water jet cut allows to cut a range of materials easily. Whatever shape, size or material.
- The cut with water jet, was developed in 1970 to cut metallic and non-metallic materials, becoming the most versatile cut in the market.
The Machine
- This machine is sturdy and strong. Some machines are built in modules, which facilitates its transport and offers greater flexibility to the customers, allowing a future increase to cutting face systems by adding new modules.
- The machine is controlled by a numerical computerized CNC control (it processes the cut with the information received from the CAD / CAM system) allowing the cut from the simplest outline to the most complex contours with minimal materials waste.
- Most water jet cutting machines cut materials up to 200mm maximum thickness at a maximum speed of 20m per minute, depending on the thickness and desired cutting quality.
The cutting process
- This cutting is done by projecting a jet of a mixture of water, sand and abrasive powder at a pressure up to 60,000 psi. (square inch pound) per square inch free.
- Basically, the jet mixing works as a saw, where the abrasive powder works like saw teeth, making 90% of the cut.
- The process begins with filtering the water, then, pressurization and storage of water until when all elements gather together in the mixing device.
- Then, the mixture is ready to be projected against the material to be cut, taking into account that the jet has to be stronger than the compressive strength of the material.
Pros and cons
- Pros
- - Less Material Loss and Production at Lower Cost-
- - Operating 24 hours a day
- - Cut without heat
- - Cuts complexed geometric pieces
- Cons
- The cutting speed is lower than other cutting processes, such as laser Cut, Oxyfuel, plasma cutting, etc.
- It is not suitable to cut materials with thin thicknesses, such as steel plates, or thin glass.
