Manufacturing Processes

181 resources created by 135 users

This Manufacturing Processes page on GoConqr gathers community-made flashcards, mind maps, quizzes, flowcharts and notes, from casting and powder metallurgy to machining, forging, welding and plastics. It's built for university students working through the processes, and for teachers after ready-made material, with school students getting a look in too. There are over 170 resources here, including more than 100 mind maps, over 40 flashcard decks and more than 15 quizzes. Pick a topic, try a quiz, then build your own maps.

About Manufacturing Processes

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources follow the main families of manufacturing processes. Casting is the biggest thread. The flashcard deck Fundamentals of Casting asks about the key steps, the advantages and disadvantages, and the two forms of mould. Manufacturing Technology I goes on to expendable and permanent moulds. Powder metallurgy has its own decks, quizzes and mind maps, including Powder manufacture.

Machining and forming come next. There are decks on turning, milling, forging and advanced machining, plus maps on lathes, chip formation, CNC machines, welding, mechanical assembly and water jet cutting.

Where to start

  1. Begin with the overview maps, such as Manufacturing processes and Metal Casting, to see how the topics fit together.
  2. Move to a flashcard deck on the same topic, for example Chapter 3 - Classification of Casting Processes, which lists the five steps of a casting process and the advantages and limitations of metal casting.
  3. Try a quiz, such as machining or EDM, to see what you remember.

Using maps and quizzes together

A mind map shows the shape of a topic: what belongs to what. A quiz then tests the detail. If a question catches you out, go back to the matching branch of the map or the deck and read it again. The flowcharts, such as Machining Process Selection, help when you need to choose between processes rather than just name them.

Teachers can use the decks and quizzes as ready-made starting points for a lecture or revision session. Most of the material is at university level, with a smaller share suited to school students and to professional readers.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Manufacturing strand of Mechanical engineering. It deals with how parts are made, which is why casting, cutting, joining and forming all appear side by side.

Choose one process, work through its map, deck and quiz, then make your own versions to fill any gaps you find.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with an overview mind map such as Manufacturing processes or Metal Casting. They show how the topics connect. Then move to a flashcard deck like Fundamentals of Casting for the key steps, and finish with a short quiz on the same topic.

What do the mind maps cover?

The mind maps, over 100 in all, cover casting, investment casting, powder metallurgy, machining, lathes, chip formation, CNC machines, welding, mechanical assembly, water jet cutting, automation and plastics and composites. Several give a general overview of manufacturing as well.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so styles and depth vary from one resource to the next.

Which levels is this page for?

Most of the resources are at university level, so the page suits university students best. Teachers can borrow material for lessons. A smaller share is at secondary level, which school students may find useful for a first look at a process.

Are there quizzes on machining?

Yes. The quiz called machining asks about turning and pocket milling on a vertical milling machine. There is also a quiz on EDM, and the flashcard decks on turning, milling and advanced machining processes give you the background.

What if a topic I need is missing?

Make your own. A free account lets you build quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, and it saves your quiz scores. In the meantime, check nearby topics here, such as material removal processes or joining processes, which may cover part of what you need.
