1. Multi -tasking system

   • This operating system may stand along a computer
   • Time- sharing system are multi- user
   • Single powerful mainframe
   • Super computer connect to dozen
   • Too many terminals - same main frame CPU

2. Mobile operating system

   • Two operating system
     • Main operating system
       • User interface and running application software.
       • Low level proprietary real time operating system (radio…)
         • security (Permission)

3. Embedded  operating system

   • Minimal user interface.
   • Accept input from sensors
   • Output to control device
   • Limit amount of RAM
   • Not permanent data storage device
   • No complex memory required.

4. Real- time operating system

   • Failsafe mechanisms designed to detect and take appropriate action if a hardware component fails.
   • Respond very quickly to any inputs or sensors
   • Able to deal with many inputs or sensors
   • safety - critical system
   • Incorporate redundancy - that is, if one component fails, it must automatically switch to backup hardware.

5. Distributed operating systems

   • Linux, Unix and Window are all available in distributed system.
   • If you provide more power to the (configured as a cluster of servers that share memory and tasks)= distributed system than its performance will better than before.
   • Several task--several computers coordinated by the operating system this is why is appears on a single system
   • Parallel processing system
     • Spreads the load over multiple servers.

6. Device driver

   • operatinng system to access hardware without details of the hardware being used
   • It is a computer program that provides a software interface to a particular hardware device
   • They are depand on hardware and on operating system.
   • Sometimes opeerating system will do automatically if it detects which it already has a driver.
   • It communicates with the device via the system bus or communication subsystem.
   • When a program starts in driver it sends the commands to the device which sends the data backto the driver which make the change in the working program.

7. BISO (Basic Input Output system)

   • It is the program stored in EPROM(Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) that gets your computer started after you turn it on.)
   • the purpose of BIOS in modern pcs is to test hard ware componentand load operating system from hardware into ram
   • In modern computer BIOS is not used after loading the operating system
   • BIOS provides an abstraction layer which allow consistent way for application and operating system to interract with in/out put devices

8. Virtual Machine

   • Can be defined as an instance where software is used to take on the function of the machine this include executing intermediate code or running an operating system within operating system within another to emulate different hardware.
