INSTITUTIONS
TOTAL INSTITUTIONS: E. Goffman 1961 (Asylums)
- institutions are on a continum from open to closed.
- TOTAL INST at the closed end
- not absolutely closed as outside wrkers/deliveries/visitors etc
- if it was totally closed it would die off
- not all of the 4 features used to define a total inst may be present in each inst
- not absolutely closed as outside wrkers/deliveries/visitors etc
- can't be totally open otherwise there would be no institution

A TOTAL INST. is a place of residence and wrk where a large no. of people in the same situation live/wrk cut off frm wider society for a prolonged period of time
every inst has encompassing tendancies (residential/nursing homes)
