1. Formed in 1962

   • Aim: To make the EU self-sufficient in foods production and to improve farmers incomes

2. Ireland joined EU in 1973

   • The CAP has given Eire €44 billion in funds since then

3. AT this time England was Eire only export partner

   • Through the CAP it has given Eire the support to export all over EU
     • Market Support + Price Guarantees

4. Irish farmers incomes rose by 60% in the 60s

5. Farmers were paid on how much the producced

   • Led to reform in 1992
     • Farmers were no longer paid on production - Single Direct Payment
       • Quotas Placed to prevent food surpluses
   • This meant farmers benefited from a disproportionate way
     • Food mountains

6. Ireland has benefited through

   • Grants/Subsidies
   • Income Support

7. Although CAP has impacted negatively on Ireland

   • Sugar Industry- Mallow/Carlow
     • Large scale lay off
     • Was worth €75 million to Economy
     • Asked farmers to cease production
