Map content

1.1:Architecture

  1. Processor

    • CPU
      • central processing unit
    • Controls and does jobs such as fetch execute and process instructions
    • There are types of speeds for processor that are classed with MHz, Hz, GHz
    • cores
      • cores come in different numbers like double core, quad core, and 8 core
      • this is where instructions are Fetched, Executed and Decoded
  2. Cache

    • Is very small but it is very fast and is very efficient
    • it holds commonly used instructions
    • increasing cache size and also decreasing memory to disk transfer can make the process of instructions faster
    • If there is more cache there is more instructions carried out simultaneously
  3. embedded system

    • usually used for special tasks or jobs
    • this one does not contain any operating system
    • made up of hardware and also software
      • example is a dishwasher
    • Computer system that operates and is permanently built in the computer
  4. Buses

    • Adress bus
      • Data Bus
        • Internal data buses are also referred to as a local bus, because they are intended to connect to local devices.
      • An address bus is a computer bus architecture used to transfer data between devices that are identified by the hardware address of the physical memory
    • Control Bus
      • A control bus is a computer bus that is used by the CPU to communicate with devices that are contained within the computer
  5. Register

    • CIR
      • Current Instruction Register
      • The instructions stored in the MDR are copied here
    • MAR
      • The Location of the next instruction is copied here and transferred along the Address Bus
      • Memory Address Register
    • MDR
      • Once Data/instructions are brought from the Memory Address in Main Memory - they are placed in the MDR
      • Memory Data Register
  6. Accumalator

    • rest of calculations are placed here
  7. Secondary storage

    • Used for long term storage of data and instructions
    • E.G.:Hard disk drive, Flash memory, solid state
