Programming Language

  1. IDE - (Integrated Development Environment)

    • Debugger
      • Highlight errors in the code.
      • Suggests possible solutions
    • Interpreter
      • A translator that turns the source code into machine code one line at a time and runs it one instruction at a time.
    • Complier
      • A programming tool to translate source code into machine code.
    • Editor
      • Allows the end user to enter the program code. It can be colour code keywords and may even autocomplete words as you type.
  2. Translator

    • Needed to either compile or interpret the source code so that the computer (CPU) can understand it.
  3. Assembler

    • A low level programming language which uses a small instruction set. These instructions are translated into machine code.
  4. Mnemonic

    • Shortened command words which are used in assembly language. For example, "Little Man Computer" used mnemonics such as "LDA", "DAT", "ADD" and "OUT".
  5. Opcode

    • The instruction that the computer (CPU) needs to carry out.
  6. Operand

    • The data or register needed for the instruction.
  7. Low level programming language

    • Instructions use binary code or mnemonics.
    • A programming language designed to be understood by computers. For example, machine code (binary).
    • It's specific to a particular machine (computer)
  8. High level programming language

    • Instructions are coded using words.
    • A programming language designed to be understood by humans (e.g. Python, Scratch and JavaScript).
    • It's portable and can be used on other machines (computers).
