  1. Qualitative methods examine the why and how of decision making, not just what, where, when, or "who", and have a strong basis in the field of sociology. Qualitative research is popular among political science, social work, and special education and education researchers.
    1. GATHERING DATA
      1. ETHNOGRAPHIES
        1. Describe and interprete the cultural behaviour, including communicative behaviour of a group
        2. CASE STUDIES
          1. Provide a holistic description of a language learing or use within a specific population and setting
          2. INTERVIEWS
            1. This technique usually ask an identical set of questions of all respondents.
            2. OBSERVATION
              1. Method of generating data which involve the researcher immersing in a research setting, and sistematically observing dimentions of that setting
              2. DIARIES/JOURNALS
                1. Internal processes and thoughts can be verbal protocols and other introspective methods to gather data.
              3. ANALYZING DATA
                1. COMPREHENSIVE: in which all possible aspects of a chosen context are researched
                  1. TOPIC ORIENTED: in which the topic is clarified through preliminary analysis and focused data collection
                    1. HYPOTHESIS: in which hypotheses are generated based on data
