Network Topologies, protocols and layers 1.5 v2

  1. most computers and devices are connected together via networks, this allows for new opportunities and advantages.

    • star network
      • advantages
        • if cable fails it will only affect one workstation
        • more computers can be added without disruption
        • easy to identify problems in the network
      • disadvantages
        • requires more cable
        • failure of the central unit will cause the whole network from working
    • FTP
      • File Transfer Protocol
      • used to exchange files between computers on a network
  2. a computer network is a number of computers linked together to allow them to share resources.

    • networked computers can share hardware, software and data
    • these networks are used in schools and buisness
  3. key words:

    • topology- the way in which computers are interrelated or arranged
    • mesh network- a local network topology in which infrastructure nodes connect directly to as many other nodes as possible and co operate with each other to efficiently route data
    • star network- a data or communication network in which all the nodes are independently connected to one central unit
    • WiFi- a facility allowing many devices to connect to the internet or communicate with one another wirelessly
    • encryption- the process of converting information or data into a code.
    • ethernet- a system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network
  4. ethernet

    • stable connection
    • reduced chance of being hacked
    • more secure
    • faster traffic speed
    • good quality signal
  5. wifi

    • cheap to set up
    • more vunerable to hacking
    • signal will reduce through walls or doors etc
    • can connect multiple devices without the need of extra hardware
    • interference can occur
    • encryption can be used to prevent unknown users stealing your packets
  6. encryption

    • a key is used to decrypt this data
    • https shows that the URL is secure and encrypted
    • encryption keeps your information safe and secure
  7. key words:

    • IP addressing-a unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
    • MAC address- (media access control) a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications at the data link layer of a network segment.
    • protocols- a set of rules or instructions that they are set to follow
  8. key words:

    • layers- packets travel through layers where protocols control them
  9. packet switching

    • a big piece of data broken down into packets to be sent to another address
    • each packet is given a header this header contains the IP address of the network and device it is sent to
      • this data is used to reassemble the data
    • if not all of the packets arrive an error message is sent to the sender and if another packet doesn't arrive then the router deletes the packets
  10. TCP/IP

    • Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, which is a set of networking protocols that allows two or more computers to communicate
