Key Concepts of Programing

  1. Keywords

    • Validation: This is to stop errors from occurring in the program
    • While loop: a loop that keeps going until the user inputs the correct data
    • Input: Data that is put into the program
    • Concatinate: variables are joined with strings using speech marks and the + operator. This is used when printing useful information to the end user
    • Program: A computer that has coded instructions to perform a task.
    • Algorithem: A set of rules to be followed e.g flowchart
    • Break: Gets you out of a loop.
    • Output: Data that us produced from a program
    • Variable: Values which are stored to help the program function properly
    • Function: Sections of code that are executed when they are needed
  2. Arrays.

    • .append is used to add an item
    • .remove is used to delete a particular value from a list
    • .pop is used to delete a particular index
    • Indexes start at 0
  3. Loops.

    • Break - Using "break" in your code will get you out of a loop.
    • While loops - This is good for validation such as preventing the user from entering numbers when the program requires letters.
    • For loops - This is a type of loop that can be customised. By this i mean you can set it to how every many times you want the code to loop
  4. Conventions

    • Variable - These can have more than one word and would use underscores. For example, a variable called user input would be called user_input
    • Functions - These usually "take in" data, process it, and "return" a result. Once a function is written, it can be used over and over and over again
    • Commenting - When coding, you would would comment code to show you understand it and to show what the code is doing. To comment use #
