Resource summary

The Reproductive System (Part 2)
  1. Fertilisation
    1. When sperm & egg encounter during sex & fuse together
      1. New cell produced=Zygote
        1. To develop properly, zygote needs to implant in uterus wall.
      2. In humans, called conception
      3. Development of feotus
        1. 1. Foetus cell divides & becomes Embryo
          1. 2. After 8 weeks, becomes foetus
            1. 3. For next 32 weeks, Zygote develops. Contained in sac called amniotic sac filled with amniotic fluid.
              1. 4. Foetus nourished by placenta. Connected to placent by umbilical cord. Viruses, drugs, antibiotics & nicotine can pass into baby also.
        2. Birth
          1. 1. Small contractions along wall of uterus
            1. 2. Strength increases & breaks amniotic sac
              1. 3. Cervix widens to 10cm and contractions push baby out.
                1. 4, Umbilical cord cut and placenta comes out of the uterus & out of vagina (Afterbirth)
          2. Feeding
            1. After the baby is born, mother may choose to breastfeed.
              1. For 1st 3 days, breasts produce colostrum.
                1. Colostrum rich in nutrients & antibodies baby needs.
                  1. Production of breastmilk=lactation
                    1. Glans in breast ( mammary glands) that produce milk.
                      1. Breastfeeding highly recommended for 1st 6 months
            2. Contraception
              1. Devices that prevent implantation or fertilization of an egg. Some also stop sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
                1. Natural
                  1. Abstinence (Not having sex)
                  2. Mechanical
                    1. Condom (latex barrier worn over erect penis)
                      1. Diaphgrams (Barriers inserted into vagina)
                      2. Chemical
                        1. Contraceptive pill(contains mixture of hormones that stop the release of eggs. Taken everyday.
                        2. Surgical
                          1. Tubal ligation(Fallopian tubes are cut)
                            1. Vasectomy(Sperm ducts are cut & tied off)
                          2. Health of the reproductive system
                            1. Infertility=Inability to have babies
                              1. Cancer can effect sexual organs. Cervical & Ovarian for women & Prostate & Testicular for men.
                                1. STI's can affect men & women. Ex. chlamydia Hiv
