INTERFERENCE
- Proactive- Old learning effects the recall of new information
- Retroactive- New learning effects previously learned information
- For example= Interference is thought to be more likely to occur where the memories are similar, for example: confusing old and new telephone numbers
- Studies= Postman (1960)- Ps were split into two groups both groups had to remember paired words eg- cat -tree but the control group had no second list
- Both asked to recall on first list control group was more accurate then experiment this suggests the second list interfered with recall
- Proactive- Old learning effects the recall of new information
