  1. New Weapons
    1. U-Boat invented by the Germans, and made because it wouldnt have the traditional rules of engagement.
      1. Tank-British invention for going over barbed wire and trenches. equiped with machine guns and light canons
        1. Mines-large bombs burried in the gorund that would explode by impact or remote
          1. Mortar-used for trench warfare because it was designed to fire at a steep angle to fall directly on the enemy
            1. Barbed wire- iron spikes scattered on the ground used mainly in no mans land
              1. Hydrophones-invented by Canadians in 1914 that was originally used for finding the titanic but used to find u-boats in the war
              2. Warfare
                1. Chemical Warfare- introduced by the Germans and used to injure/kill people. Mainly used for trench warfare. Chemicals used for this were tear gas, mustard gas, phosgene, and chlorine. These caused damage to the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. often caused death, pain, blistered, and suffocation.
                  1. U-Boat warfare- these boats were introduced by Germany and mainly used to starve the other country by sinking and stealing eachothers ships/food
                    1. Trench Warfare- tunnels in the ground at the battlefront where mainly everything happened.
                    2. American Expedition Force
                      1. Basically they were Americas army, but they fought in/for France and britain
                        1. 320,000 casualties. 53402 battle deaths, 63,114 non combat deaths, and 204,000 wounded.
                        2. Causes of ww1
                          1. Archduke Assassination: He was the heir to Austro-Hungarian throne. Assassinated on June 28, 1914. This caused the war in a way because the Black Hand terrorist group originated in Serbia, causing these two countries to go to war, thus causing a chain reaction because of alliances.
                            1. Another cause of ww1 is that there were economic, territorial, and politacal conficts in europe, somewhat due to industrialization and nationalism.
                            2. Alliances
                              1. Triple Entante (triple Alliance): consists of Britain, France and Russia. Later on the US.
                                1. Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. Also known as the Quadruple Alliance.
                                  1. Neutral Powers: Switzerland, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands
                                  2. Conscientious Objectors
                                    1. people who dont want to serve in the military because of beliefs, or support of US enemies.
                                    2. Role of African American and Women
                                      1. The great migration- African americans go north because of jobs from the war.
                                        1. More women did mens jobs because they were drafted into the army.
                                        2. Battle of the atlantic
                                          1. The battle of the Atlantic is the fihting of ships and u-boats between Germany, England, and any other countrys ships that pass through. If a ship would pass through "their territory" they would most likely take everything from the ship and damage or sink it, occasionaly letting passengers escape first.
