REVIEW 351

  1. Paradigms? Category? What do they look like & when to use?

    • Imperative Programing (C)
      • Oldest Paradigm , Procedural (assignments, loops, sequences, conditional statements) languages like Cobol , Fortran, C, Ada, Perl
    • Object-Oriented Programing (C++, Java)
      • An OO Program is a collection of objects that interact by passing messages that transform the state, Sending messages, Inheritance, Polymorphism, Languages like Java, C++, C#, & Python
    • Functional Programming (F#, Lisp)
      • Functional Programming models a computation as collection of mathematical functions such as Input == Domain and Output == Range
        • Functional languages are characterized by their functional composition and recursion with languages such as Lisp Scheme, ML, Haskell, F#
    • Logic Programming (rile-based, prolog
      • Logic programming declares what outcome the program should accomplish, rather than how it should be accomplished with languages like prolog
        • Programs as sets of constraints on a problem, Achieve all possible solutions, NONdeterministic
    • Reactive/Event Driven
      • Event-Driven programs do not control the sequence in which input events occur; instead, they are written to react to any reasonable sequence of events
        • The program itself does not have exact order of execution, but triggered by inputs and is designed to run indefinitely, this is used for graphical interfaces, games, embedded applications
  2. What is this class about

    • Learning new languages, when to chose a certain program over other for your program
    • Make sense and understand different language
    • Understand PL behind the scene with compiler vs intreperter
  3. Intrepreter & compiler. WHat are they? Processes? Pros and Cons? When to use

    • Compiler
      • A compiler takes a code and translates the whole code beginning to end in order to send the information to the machine
      • Also a compiler has an extra step called the code optimizer
    • Interpreter
      • Unlike the compiler the interpreter translates the code to machine language line by line and not all at once
