TISSUE TYPES

  1. NERVOUS

    • MUSCLE
      • EPITHELIAL
        • Simple Columnar
          • Location: nonciliated type lines most of the digestive tract (stomach to anal canal), gallbladder and excretory ducts of some glands; ciliated variety lines small bronchi, uterine tubes, and some regions of the uterus.
          • Function: Absorption; secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances; ciliated type propels mucus (or reproductive cells) by ciliated action.
        • Simple Cuboidal
          • Function: secretion and absorption
          • Location: Kidney tubules; ducts and secretory portions of small glands, ovary surface.
        • Transitional Epithelium
          • Location: lines the ureters, urinary bladder, and part of the urethra
          • function: stretches readily and permits distension of urinary organ by contained urine
        • stratified squamous
          • Function: protects underlying tissues in areas subject to abrasion
          • Location: nonkeratinized type forms the moist lining of the esophagus, mouth, and vagina; keratinized type forms the epidermis of the skin, a dry membrane.
        • SIMPLE SQUAMOUS
          • Function: secretion and absorption
          • Location: lining of kidney tubules ducts of glands covering surface of ovaries
        • Pseudostratified columnar
          • Function: Secretion, particularly of mucus; propulsion of mucus bu ciliary action.
          • Location: nonciliated type in male's sperm-carrying ducts and ducts of large glands; ciliated variety lines the trachea, most of the upper respiratory tract.
      • CONNECTIVE
        • Cartilage
        • Bone
          • Function: bone supports and protects
          • Location: bones
        • Elastic
          • allow for stretching and recoil
          • walls of elastic arteries, trachea, vocal chords; suspensory ligament of penis
        • Regular
          • attaches bone to bone (tendon) as well as muscle to bone (tendon); resists stress applied in one direction
          • tendons & ligaments
        • Reticular
          • Location: lymph nodes, spleen, liver
          • Function: forms supportive framework for these soft organs
        • Irregular
          • withstands stress applied in all directions; durable
          • most of dermis is skin; periosteum covering bone; perichondrium covering cartilage; some organ capsules
        • Blood
          • Function: transport of respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, and other substances
          • Location: contained within blood vessels
        • Adipose
          • Location: under skin, and around organs
          • Function: stores lipids (energy), insulation, cushions organs
      • smooth
      • cardiac
      • skeletal
        • Location: skeletal
        • Function: movement, heat, posture
