1. Magnetic

   • read/write move across the medium
   • E.g Hard disk drive, Tape drives
   • Change how magnetised that pat of the medium is

2. Solid State

   • Made of microchips
   • E.g solid State drive, USB memory stick, SD card

3. Optical

   • Laser light
     • Creates marks in a pattern on the disk
     • Detects where the marks are and translates them so they can be read
   • E.g Blu ray, DVD ROM, CD ROM

4. Secondary Storage

   • Used for long term storage of data
   • E.g hard disk drive, DVD-R
   • non volatile
   • No access via input/output
   • Needed for larger storage capacity
   • Used to backup data

5. Cache

   • Very fast
     • Holds commonly used instructions
       • Small amount of memory on processor
