On The Job Training
Advantages
- Cheaper to carry out compared to off the job training, this is because the business does not have to pay for an individual to come into thier workplace and train the employees. Therefore, the business can save money and they have the advantage of teaching their employees what they want them to know, i.e. specific rules or methods.
- Employees are not taken away from their jobs, therefore they can still be productive. This allows the employees to still be able to continue work that they have been assigned. For example, if the employees are taken away from their workplace for training, this can create more work to build up meaning that they will have more work to do once they come back from the training. This may lead to increased stress levels in employees and even decreased productivity and bad attitudes towards their work.
- Employees continue to earn money as they learn new skills, this benefits the employee because it means that while they are keeping up to date with, i.e. working methods, they can still make money because they are at work rather than being away from work not making an income
Disadvantages
- There may be distractions in the workplace, which may lessen the effectiveness of the training, leading to unhappy employers because their employees are not keeping up to date with the working methods Distractions may include; work that needs to completed or meetings. This can lead to the training being a waste of time because the employees are caught up in other matters involving their job or increased stress/work levels.
- The training may not be certified or deemed as a qualification as there is no evidence on paper, this may lead to problems with inspectors as the employees/employer may say they have a qualification in a new working method but they do not have it officially, which can create further problems, such as the business gaining a reputation for lying.
- Employees may pick up bad habits from the person that is training them as they are not a professional trainer, this may lead to work being done poorly or wrong, and this can create problems such as the employees making mistakes which could be easily avoided when i.e. manufacturing a product because they are doing as their unofficial trainer had shown them.
