The Study of Language Functions

  1. Language functions help people to create cultural identities based on the human language learning system in a socio-cognitive processes of the human’s Neuro-Semantic Language Learning System.

  2. LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS

    • semantic relationships
      • Consists of the meaning of those relationships about people, their actions, and their objects within a context or setting.
      • Extended semantic relationship
        • The child is learning how language functions to express his cognitive and social development which in turn results in others assigning meaning to what the child knows. The child’s utterances are more than just structures; the child’s words and acts represent the child’s thinking and social development.
      • Problems with acquiring basic semantic relationships
        • Childs might not develop the concepts easily and will have difficulty acquiring language functions and affects the social and cognitive development.
    • Social intentions
      • Some of the social intentions for representing thinking through language functions include greeting, rejecting, denying, existing, negating, and requesting.
    • Preoperational cognition
      • The child learns social and cognitive development more than sentences structures
  3. EXPANDED LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS

    • Displacement
      • Progression of development of social and cognitive development skills
    • Semanticity
      • The increasing complexity of meaning throughout life.
    • Flexibility
      • Take the basic semantic relationship of an agent, action, and object and move the meaning into complex ideas across time and space. Allow the speaker to be more flexible with language
    • Productivity
      • Increases a person’s ability to use language in a variety of ways for a variety of purposes. These expanded language functions help a person become more productive, because the person, who has maximum use of these expanded language functions, is able to use language to create a variety of linguistic forms for literacy.
    • Redundancy
      • When a speaker continues to acquire meaning through the Neuro-Semantic Language LearningSystem, then the speaker may try to use more words to convey a particular meaning
    • Concrete cognition
      • The meaning of basic semantic relationships of people, their actions, and their objects increases through the neuro-semantic processes of overlapping and layering of patterns and concepts to form more complex concepts.
    • Speech acts
      • Semantic development allows a speaker of English to use language to perform a variety of functions within a conversation
    • Expanded speech acts
      • As speakers engage in discourse, the language functions of the speech acts generate more and more meaning for the speakers and the listeners.
