Using cloud and traditional systems together

  1. What is it?

    • Many services use cloud technologies to store important data, which can be synchronised between different devices.
  2. Synchronising content over devices.

    • Sometimes applications and files are located on an organisations own systems or users PC, or they could be in the cloud. Most organisations and many individuals use a combination of both. When you are using a combination of both, synchronisation is particularly important. for example, a salesperson has files stored on their work Pc which they are then synchronised to their laptops and are available via a smartphone.
    • Another example of synchronising data is using Apple's iTunes to manage the media on a Apple iPhone or iPad. A user can choose to automatically back up their device to the cloud, and to only sync ticked songs and videos (rather than all content) over Wi-Fi. If the user has several devices that access the same cloud content, all the devices would be updated.
    • Media (games, music and video) could be stored on your home machine or in the cloud. Synchronising the content of devices is often optional but is important if you want to access the same files on each device, and it is essential if you are working with documents to make sure you are always using the most up-to-date version.
  3. Online/offline working

    • Laptops are often issued to staff who work from remote locations, such as their own home, at a customer's premises or when travelling. This allows them to access an organisation's systems while they are away from their normal business location(off-site).
