  1. Central executive

    • Visuospatial sketchpad
      • LTM
      • "Inner eye"
        • Visual and spatial information
          • Visuo-cache store (Logie (1995))
            • Inner scribe for spatial relations
    • Episodic Buffer
    • Phonological loop
      • Articulatory process
        • holds words heard/seen and silently repeats them (a maintenance rehearsal)
      • Phonological store
        • holds words you hear
      • Auditory information
    • Key component
      • directs attention to tasks
        • "Boss"
  2. All components have limited capacities and durations, hence the need for all of them

  3. AO2

    • Strengths
      • Baddeley & Hitch
        • Experiment - Task 1: true or false task (central executive) then with a version of Task 2: a) say random numbers (articulatory loop and central executive) or b) say "the" repeatedly (articulatory loop)
          • First test slower as involved both
            • Completing 2 tasks that involve same component causes difficulty
      • Comparisons with MSM
        • offers better account of STM
          • moves on from describing immediate memory as a unitary store
          • offers maintenance rehearsal as an option rather than the only means in which info is kept in STM
          • emphasises processes more (MSM = structure)
    • Weaknesses
      • Central executive - too vague
        • notion of single central executive is suggest wrong (could be several components) (case study of EVR)
          • shows more complex than currently represented
      • evidence from brain-damaged patients, however issues with this are:
        • 1. can't make a "before & after" comparison so not clear if changes in behaviour are caused by the damage
        • 2. process of brain injury is traumatic, which may in itself change behaviour
