Chapter 21, Contemporary Trends In Software Development

  1. Object Orientated Programming.

    • Uses a concept called 'objects' which contains data and functions.
      • Data, known as properties, defines parts of an object. I.E If an object is a rectangle, its properties would be the width and the length.
      • Functions, also known as methods, are used to perform a task. For example in the line 'Width*Height' the multiplication is the function.
      • Lastly a class defines properties and functions. Classes are like templates for properties and can be inherited
  2. Procedural Programming

    • This heavily relies on implemented procedures, known as functions and sub-functions. These are step-by-step instructions.
      • It uses Top-Down design which involves breaking problems down to smaller problems. Procedural Programming provides features which allows programmers to use this.
        • It features includes variables, data structures and program structures.
      • Functions are written to perform tasks and variables and cab be used to solve small problems. they can be called repeatedly.
        • Programs are always made out of functions as well as procedures.
      • Examples of procedural programming language are C, COBOL and FORTRAN.
  3. Software Development Enviorment

    • However, Software Development Environment provides an integrated set of programming tools to build an application to code and test. This is known as Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
      • Code can be written anywhere, like text editor such as notepads. To get them to run you just need to change the file type.
      • This software provides programmers tools for editing, debugging and compiling code as well as GUI features.
      • An example of this is Microsoft Visual Studio.
  4. Editing Features

    • An IDE allows the programmer to enter and edit code as well as access to object, methods, properties, events and at design time!
      • Clipboard
      • Line Numbering
      • Colour Text
      • Collapsible Code
      • Code Complexion Tools.
