dual store model of memory

1. sensory input

   • sensory register
     • attention
       • short term/working memory
         • encoding
           • long-term memory
             • function: organizes and stores info
               • capacity: some say unlimited, some say otherwise
                 • duration: some say permanent, some say it can disappear
           • maintenance rehearsal

               • feature list theory
               • prototype theory

                 • flashbulb memories
                   • Something that happened that produced an arousal
                     • ie. when andy griffith died
               • schemas
           • forgetting:
             • amnesia
               • anterograde
               • retrograde
               • infantile amnesia

                 • failure to retrieve
                   • failure to encode
                     • repression
         • function: where info is actively worked on
           • capacity: 7 +/- 2 units of info
             • duration: 30 secs
               • form of storage: likely auditory
                 • chunking

               • personal significance
           • cocktail party phenomenon
             • has limited processing capacity
     • function: folds info long enough to be processed for basic info
       • capacity: unlimited
         • duration: .3 seconds for visual, 2 seconds for auditory
           • form of storage: same as sensed
