Classification Of Schicophrenia

Commonly diagnosed between ages of 15-35
1. Can affect thought processes, physical function and perception or reality
  1. Some may encounter symptoms persistently or sporadically
Positive Symptoms: symptoms in addition to normal functioning
1. Hallucinations - no one else can perceive. Can be auditory or visual.
  1. Also olfactory (nasty smells) or tactile (feeling of being touched.
2. Delusions - irrational beliefs that seem real but aren't true.
  1. Paranoid Delusions - may involve being persecuted by others.
  2. Delusions of Grandeur - exaggerated beliefs about ones abilities.
Negative Symptoms: symptoms that involve a reduction in normal functioning
1. Speech Poverty - reduction in amount or quality of what is spoken.
  1. May involve reduced verbal fluency, language complexity or a delay in verbal responses.
2. Avolition - reduced motivation to take part in activities
