powers and roots

  1. multiplying powers

    • add the powers, so 3⁴ + 3⁶ = 3¹⁰
  2. dividing powers

    • you subtract the powers, so 3⁶/ 3⁴ = 3²
  3. when raising one power to another, you multiply them

    • (3²)⁴ = 3⁸
  4. anything to the power of 0 is just 1

  5. if a fraction is powered, you apply the power to top and bottom

  6. if it is a negative power, you turn it upside down, so 7-² = 1/7²

  7. with any fractional powers, you put the denominator as your route (two would be a square route), and then the numerator is the power of the route, outside the brackets. so if it was 2²/³ would be (∛2)²
