Main Functions of an operating systems

  1. User interface

    • There are three types of interfaces GUI (Graphical user interface) and CLI (Command line interface) and lastly Menu driven interface
      • GUI:This interface works by commands are represented by images usually icons when clicked the command is run this is best for beginers as its is simple and easy to understand but for experinced users they can be annoying as easy tasks can take a lot of operations.
      • CLI: In this type of interface you interact with computer by typing in lines of command. This interface is better for experienced users as the commands have to be crocteley typed and the right order or the computer cannot understand them. There are pros to this interface they are quicker as they don't use as much processor power and memory
      • Menu driven interface:In this interface a Menu will be presented which will take you to a further menu. This interface is easy for non experienced users as they don't have to remember any commands but can be tedious as you have to go through many levels of menus just to get to the command you want
  2. multitasking

    • This allows the user to run more than one task at anyone time it also allows you to switch between each task without the information being lost.An example of multitasking is having a browser open as well as a word.
  3. security

    • Operating systems give a computer security as you usually have to have to dientify who you are this is done using passwords
  4. managing memory

    • This will track all of the memory devices and controls which appllication can use which area of memory.all memory can be changed, read and written but when the memory has no space left it will send out an alert telling the user
