  1. a large bend in a river
    1. transportation: the movement of eroded material to somewhere else
      1. Erosion: the wearing away of rock by rivers
        1. flood plain: the flat area alongside the river often flooded
          1. Alluvium: the fine material left behind after a flood
            1. activity on the outside bend of the meander: the channel is deepened, erosion takes place, fastest flow is on the outside of the bend and the bank is worn away and a river cliff develops.
              1. activity on the inside bend of the meander: deposition takes place, the channel is shallow, slowest flow is on the inside of the bend and a small beach of material builds up
