Structure of the atom
  1. Structure of the nucleus
    1. Consists of:
      1. Positively charged Protons
        1. Atomic number (Z) = no. protons in atom
        2. Neutral Neutrons
          1. Mass number (A) = no. neutrons in atom (N) + Atomic no.(Z)
          2. Protons and neutron together known as nucleons
        3. Electrons and charge of an atom
          1. In neutral atom no. protons = no. electrons around nucleus
            1. Atom becomes charged by gaining/losing electrons
              1. Atoms gaining electrons are negatively charged
                1. negative ions called anions
                2. Atoms losing electrons are positively charged
                  1. positive ions called cation
                3. Atom with charge called ion
                4. E.g. Ion Al
                  1. Atomic no. (Z) = 13
                    1. Mass no. (A) = 27
                      1. No. protons (Z)= 13
                        1. atom had 13 electrons when neutral. but gains 3 electrons to obtain 3+ chare
                          1. No. electrons =>13-3 = 10 electrons
                          2. No. neutrons (N) = mass no. (A) - Atomic no. ( Z)
                            1. 27-13= 14 neutron
