The Multi Store Model - Atkinson & Shiffrin

1. Sensory Memory

   • contains information from the senses
   • Constantly receives info but most of it gets no attention
     • If a person's attention is focused on the sensory store the data is transferred to STM where info is stored by how it sounds (acoustic)
   • Incoming data remains in the store for a short time

2. Moving info from STM to LTM - Rehearsal

   • The more info is rehearsed the better it is remembered
     • Once info is in the LTM it remains there for a lifetime

3. Displacement

   • If the info is not rehearsed enough it's lost rapidly within 18 seconds
   • Due to the limited capacity of STM old info can be displaced by new info
   • Info can be retrieved back into STM when needed
