    1. Total War: Where all resources from a country is being used to achieve victory
      1. Civil War: Fought between people from the same country
        1. Limited War: Where only some of a nations resources are being used. Not all resources are necessary.
          1. Guerrilla: Small groups are used to attack strong points strategically
          2. Origins and Causes of War
            1. Strong Imperial powers drew conflict for land and power
              1. Included: Austro-Hungarian Empire, Britain and its Empire, France and its Empire, Germany and its empire, and the Russian Empire, Ottoman Empire, Italy, Japan, and USA
              2. Great Britain(GB) felt threatened by Germany
                1. Germany was building their Navy
                  1. both wanted land in North Africa
                    1. Germany's increased contact with the Ottoman Empire
                    2. Trade market caused a lot of conflict between European Powers
                      1. Military powers grew and grew
                        1. Nationalism made each country feel in titled for everything
                        2. Countries started to mobilized
                          1. Russia mobilized
                            1. Caused Germany to make plans to attack Russia and France
                              1. So then France mobilized
                                1. Chain of reactions made Germany to declare war on Russia. France to declare war on Germany
                          2. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand June 28, 1914
                            1. Austria responded with series of demands.
                              1. Alliances grew stronger with Austria depended on Germany and Serbia depending on Russia who was with France
                          3. Nature of 20h Century Wars
                            1. Large Armies, meaning large casualties; Total war
                              1. More Destructive Weapons were used
                                1. Machine guns, huge artillery, gas, flame throwers, and aircraft
                                2. Only real strategy was to use heavy artillery.
                                  1. Trench Warfare was used and it involved soldiers barricaded in trenches shooting the attacking forces which were in open land.
                                  2. Homefront was very important involving women who worked in all sorts of jobs
                                    1. This gave more of a status for the women giving them the sense of entitlement and this eventually gave women the right to vote.
                                      1. Worked in factories making war supplies and filled in for men at war in white collar jobs
                                    2. Efffects of WW1
                                      1. Russian Revolution of 1917 took place
                                        1. The Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart at the end of the war
                                          1. Germany and Japans defeat caused them to turn and cause some of the major poblems that caused WW2
                                            1. USA became a huge world power being one of the only standing booming economies
                                              1. Increased industry
                                              2. Women gained power and respect
