  1. Piggy says to Ralph "grownups know things. They ain't afraid of the dark. They'd meet and have tea and discuss. Then things 'ud be all right
    1. It was due to the adults that they're stranded in the first place
      1. They themselves could not discuss and solve rtheir problems and as a result they turned to wa
      2. If they had been able to come up with another solution than war, the boys would never have fled school and would never have been shot down, therefore avoiding ever being on the island.
  2. Piggy's name
    1. The boys admit their fear and belief towards the beast and believed that the beast would eat from them
      1. They decide to give the beast something to feed upon
      2. They discuss how they should sacrifice the pig
        Later on they murder Piggy and discover that the beast did not actually exist in another creature but was within themselves
    2. Important character nevertheless we never find out his true name. He is severely teased despite being the smartest boy
  3. Piggy's eyes
    1. he can't see well because of his glasses
    2. got greatest insight on what will happen in the future- what will go wrong and right and how should they behave accordingly
2. Fire
  1. Fire at end was intended for destruction but in fact saved them all.
3. Parachutist
  1. Boys wanted guidance or a sign from the adults- hoping it will increase their chances of survival
    1. Parachutist dropped on island and the only presence of an adult ends up causing the most chaos as they belivee he is the beast.
  2. A soldier in the war who died in the air force while saving his country
  3. The fact that the boys thought that he was a beast is ironic because the soldier is far from a beast
4. Jack
  1. In chapter 4, Jack abandons fire as he fells it is unimportant however in the end Jack is the one who starts the fire that led them to being saved.
  2. At the beginning of the book he says to the young boys- "we've got to have rules and obey the. After all we're not savages.'

      1. he encourages boys to forget civilisation and act upon their instincts

5. Simon
  1. Simon's death
    1. He was bringing them the truth about the beast- what they feared the most
    2. It was there fear that led to the dance that made them kill him
  2. Simon is considered the Christ like figure on the island. Jesus is universally known as the savior, while Simon was on the way to save the boys literally and metaphorically by telling them the truth about the beast he was murdered for being mistaken for the beast (devil).
6. Officer
  1. He thought the boys were chasing each other for fun on the island. When, in fact, they were chasing Ralph as he was trying to escape the boys otherwise he'd be brutally killed
  2. Saves the boys so he is hero-like but is part of a battleship himself. So he saves the boys from each other just to go off and be involved in the deaths of others
7. Boat-shaped Island
  1. Ironic because all the boys needed to get off the island was a boat
8. Refugees
  1. They're running away from war, however they ended up spending time in a war themselves
9. Perfect Island = dystopia
  1. Starts off fun but ends up being a pure dystopia
  2. Dystopia- an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian one.
  3. We think it'll go one way but in the end this micro-cosmic civilisation is born
