WHAT IS SKIN?

1. The outermost layer of the skin is made up of dead cells.

2. Epidermis: upper layer of the skin.

   • It is made up of five layers or strata.
     • The stratum basalis is just above the dermis. Keratinocytes
       • What does keratin mean?
         • It comes from a protein or an intermediate filament called cytokeratin. We begin to produce in the basal stratum.
       • In the basal layer we obtain the color of our skin.
         • melanocytes: cells that help determine the color of our skin

3. Thorny stratum: It is our thorny layer. very pointed shapes, and the reason they are pointed is because they are still connected by these desmosomes, but they have lost their water.

   • that's why sometimes these layers look wrinkled
   • Langerhans cells: immune cell that looks for foreign bodies or pathogens or things that can be destructive to our body such as bacteria and fungi and eat them.

4. The most superficial layer is called the stratum granulosa: it is named for the amount of granulocytes.

   • The granules release lamellar bodies, which together form a liquid layer found on top of the skin.
     • They prevent foreign pathogens from making their way deeper into our skin and ultimately into our bloodstream.

5. stratum lucidum: it is our lucid or clear layer.

   • Our keratinocytes worked so hard to produce these keratohyalin granules and release these lamellar bodies that they actually died when they reached the stratum lucidum.

6. stratum corneum: our top layer of the epidermis of our skin completely.

   • It has stacked layers of our keratinocytes, our dead keratinocytes, and we can have as many as 15 to 20 stacked layers of these flat, simple, squamous epithelial cells.

7. We don't have vessels anywhere in the epidermis because our nutrients and oxygen come from below and work their way up.
