Herzberg's 2 factor theory
First person to say that factors that cause motivation and de-motivation are different
He said that motivators help individuals enjoy and grow into their jobs whereas, hygiene factors dont motivate as theyre expected they jusy demotivate if missing.
One key feature of Herzberg's theory is that pay is a hygiene factor and doesnt motivate. improving motivation should be through both hygiene and motivators so dont remove all factors that cause dissatisfaction (paperwork) whilst trying to create a job that contains motivators to stimulate employees
Skilled vs. Unskilled workers
- Skilled employees similar to Maslow where should have basic needs but puts little focus on team working.
- Unskilled workers increasing pay, improving job security and personal safety would reduce job dissatisfaction but not increase motivation. Motivation will be achieved by giving employees more responsibilities and training
Manual vs. Knowledge based workers
- Manual workers similar to Maslow’s theory; responsibility and recognition of achievement.
- Skilled-based employees Motivate through enrichment (more complexity to use abilities), praise of progress but not job enlargement.
Herzberg doesn’t distinguish between ages in his model, he would argue that motivators and hygiene factors should exist independent of age and would be greatly influenced by the job that are asked to do.
Paid and voluntary work has no specific reference. He would argue that motivators would be more influential in voluntary work as considering they don’t even have pay as a hygiene factor. Other than this no real difference between the groups.
