About Motivation
GoConqr OriginalWhat the resources cover
This unit is about why people work and how a business can keep them motivated. The mind maps carry most of the weight. The one on Financial and non financial motivation sets out pay methods such as piecework and commission. Financial methods of motivation separates wages from salaries. NON-FINANCIAL MOTIVATORS and Non-pay Motivators cover the rewards that are not pay.
The theorists
Many resources are built around named thinkers. Herzberg's 2 factor theory explains that the factors behind motivation and de-motivation differ. There are maps on Maslow's hierarchy, Elton Mayo and Taylor's view that workers are motivated mainly by pay. Mc Gregors theory X and Y covers management styles. Motivational theories adds Vroom, Drucker, Peters and Locke.
Where to start
- Open the mind map called Motivation for an overview of what motivation is and why it matters.
- Move to the theorist maps, one at a time, starting with Taylor and ending with Herzberg.
- Read the financial and non-financial maps to see how theory turns into practice.
- Work through the flashcards, such as Motivation in theory and practice (1.4.4), to fix the key terms.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a map first, then close it and take a quiz. Business Studies: Financial Motivators suits the pay methods. Management Skills: MOTIVATION is a good check on wider ideas. Any question you miss tells you which map to reopen. The exam-style note on Maslow's theory is useful for practising written answers.
Where it fits
This unit sits in the People, Organisation and Leadership strand of Business administration and management (incl. project management). It links naturally with the leadership flashcards listed alongside it.
Choose one map today and see how much you can recall, then add your own cards for the gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the mind map called Motivation, which asks what motivation is, why it matters and how a business can motivate people. It also introduces Herzberg and Maslow. After that, move on to the single-theorist maps and the financial methods map.
What do the mind maps cover?
They cover financial methods such as piecework, commission, wages and salaries, plus non-financial motivators. They also cover theorists including Taylor, Mayo, Maslow, Herzberg, McGregor, Vroom and Locke. Some maps give a general overview of motivation, so you can pick the depth you need.
Which exams do these resources suit?
The resources mention GCSE Business, IGCSE Business Studies, Edexcel IGCSE Business Studies, GCSE Business Studies, A-level Business and IB Business Management. Most are pitched at school level, and a good share suit university students. A small number suit professional candidates.
Are the resources free, and who made them?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so styles and depth vary. Check a few and use the ones that fit your course.
Is there anything for teachers?
Teachers can use the slide sets, such as Motivation in Theory and Practice and Motivation at Work, along with the mind maps, flashcards and quizzes. Together they make ready-made material for lessons, revision tasks and quick checks on understanding. A free account lets you save and adapt your own versions.
What if the topic I need is missing?
Look at the related leadership flashcards and the theorist maps, as many ideas overlap. If a gap remains, you can build your own mind map, flashcards or quiz for it and keep it alongside the community resources.
